Being from the South, I am no stranger to the comforts of a trailer park. In recent years (all thanks to Honey Boo Boo, the poster-child for inbreeding) pop culture has really embraced the idea of white trash.
Located in Joshua Tree, California, Hicksville is a trailer park palace motel and artist retreat. Instead of traditional rooms, Hicksville has themed trailers in any number of various themes designed to appeal to the random quirky personalities of Southern California travelers.
My favorite of these themed trailers is “The Fifi”, which looks to me like the dressing room of a Weho drag queen, or my bedroom growing up. The space is described as “like being inside a genie bottle,” and was dreamt up and designed by Ryan and Marci Hessling from Fifi Mahoney’s wig store in New Orleans. “The Fifi” contains everything a fabulous vacationer might need, such as a luxurious satin bed, swanky bar, lit vanity, and a miniature wig store.
Hicksville, built by LA writer and director Morgan Higby Night came about because Night wanted to create a safe place for artists to collaborate and create. Then, he realized that artists don’t have any money, so he opened up the motel to cater to people from all walks of life and backgrounds.
You can see some of the other themed trailers here, but personally I don’t think its necessary. If you visit Hicksville and stay anywhere other than “The Fifi” I am revoking your gay card, effective immediately.
