10 Best Lip Primer Products to Try Now

Written by Allison

We rounded up the best lip primer products so you can just relax with an adorable pout.

Lip primer products are a godsend, we tell ya. We can remember back a few years when they were few and far between. Sure, you could use concealer to tone down the natural color of your lips (or as a base for black lipstick, because we’re not judging), or just swipe a lip balm before a matte lip but they weren’t exactly ideal. Now it seems every brand has their own lip primer products to keep your pout lasting longer without drying your lips into raisins.

Chapstick doesn’t cut it anymore

A good lip primer should help to keep your lipstick of choice lasting longer, and make matte lipsticks, especially matte liquid lipsticks more comfortable to wear. And bonus points go out when they keep your lips hydrated without altering the lipstick. We’ve got ten favorite lip primer products for you to try.

Always let your lip primer sink in for a minute or two before applying lipstick.

Fresh Sugar Lip Serum Advanced Therapy – $36

We’re starting off with (gasp!) not a primer product. Instead we recommend using the Fresh Sugar Lip Serum Advanced Therapy at night or in the morning well before you apply your daily lip. Just like their beloved lip balms this lip treatment is super hydrating and will keep dry lips happy. It’s always better to start off with hydrated, non-chapped lips.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Primer – $16

If you are a liquid lipstick lover, you need to give the Anastasia Beverly Hills primer a try. Made to go along with their iconic (yet drying) matte liquid lipsticks this primer creates a smooth canvas for even the trendiest lollipop lipstick looks, nevermind the simple ones. Your lips will feel so much more hydrated at the end of the day if you prep your lips with hydration first.

Guerlain Liplift Lip Primer – $37

For a similarly hydrating boost try the ultra luxe Guerlain option. Made with micro-plumping beads not only do you get smooth lips, but you get some plumping action too. This lip primer is totally unlike lip plumpers that require a mild reaction (i.e. stinging or tingling) to get the plumping effect. Can we use this on our eye bags too?

Bite Beauty Line and Define Lip Primer – $22

For a precise take on lip priming try this Bite Beauty option. It’s similar to the above moisturizing lip primers but does double duty as a lip liner. It can help to keep your lips soft and to keep your lipstick from feathering. What more could you ask for?

Colourpop Lippie Primer – $5

The budget option is, of course, courtesy of Colourpop. Don’t let the $5 price tag serve as an indicator of quality. It’s made to work alongside their hippie sticks to get a longer and more comfortable wear.

Urban Decay Rehab Makeup Prep Lip Love – $16

For an ultra hydrating hit, we recommend a light dab of the Urban Decay Rehab Lip Love. It will condition your lips and help to give more slip to stubborn, dry matte lipsticks. Make sure not to over apply because it can cause decrease wear time because it’s just so emollient.

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Lipsaver Treatment Primer – $19

In a similar vein is this Tarte option. Straight from their uber hydrating Rainforest of the Sea line this treatment primer is going to give you super soft lips. Just make sure you work it into your lips before applying your lip color.

Stila Lush Lips Water Plumping Primer  – $21

This Stila lip primer is one of the most interesting formulas we have come across. It not only plumps your lips, but it seals in moisture, and tones down your natural lip color so your lipstick color truly shines. That’s a triple threat.

Too Faced Lip Insurance Lip Primer – $20

The Too Faced lip primer is not unlike their cult favorite eyeshadow primer. It acts as the glue to hold your lipstick in place making sure it won’t feather or budge. It even helps to reduce transferring with wandering lipsticks.

Ciate Magic Pout Potion Lip Plumping Primer – $20

Last but not least is this Ciate plumping lip primer. Unlike many of the primers above, this primer doesn’t focus on keeping your lips hydrated. Instead it works to plump your lips, cancel out your natural lip color, and keep your lipstick exactly where you want it.

Always primer first for a comfortable lipstick look.
