2017 Miami Carnival Will Still Happen Despite Irma’s Best Efforts

Written by Bryce

Miami Carnival has the green light despite Hurricane Irma’s efforts to cancel all fun.

Hurricane Irma may have carved a path of destruction through Florida, but she simply wasn’t enough to stop this year’s Miami Carnival, set to take place on Sunday, October 8, 2017. File under #blessed, because we know you were looking for a place to wear your glitter eyebrows.

Set against Miami’s diverse array of Caribbean and Latin populations, the weekend displays a near endless sea of colorful costumes, classic sounds of the Caribbean like steel drums, locally-inspired fare, and even a Caribbean-themed crafting corner for families.

Miami Carnival is a real and tangible layer of the Caribbean heritage that contributes to the arts, music, history and cultural identity of Caribbean people”, states Joan Hinkson, Miami Broward Carnival One Carnival Host Committee Chair. “Miami’s rich cultural heritage mixture of Caribbean, Latin and other ingredients makes it the perfect destination and a fitting end to the Carnival season before folks head to Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival.”

Revelers from the Bahamas, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua, Bermuda, and beyond are expected to join, giving a decidedly upbeat lift to a broader community still reeling from the effects of an especially dramatic hurricane season.

Miami Carnival is not only a visible spark to the South Florida cultural tourism economy, but also embodies a lifeline to thousands of South Florida residents of Caribbean descent, irrespective of language or ethnicity, who yearn for a quality of life that celebrates their musical, artistic, and culinary traditions,” noted Marlon Hill, general counsel for Miami Carnival.
