This 40-Year-Old Twinkie Refuses to Decompose

A 40 year old twinkie.

The world’s oldest Twinkie is very stubborn, apparently.

40 year old twinkie

Back in 1976, a chemistry teacher named Roger Bennatti in Maine unwrapped a fresh Twinkie and put it on his chalkboard so the students could see how long it would take to decompose. Now, 40 years later, mold still refuses to grow on the darned thing, making the world wonder exactly what we have been putting into our mouths all these years. But, hey, that’s America– home of the brave(st food ingredients), the largest ball of yarn, children’s meals with more saturated fat than any adult should eat, and now the oldest twinkie.

The official shelf life of a Twinkie is only 25 days (according to what one can only assume must be FDA standards, but who even knows), but Bennatti’s unmolded, hardly decomposed Twinkie defies all of that logic, since it still sits in a glass case, unrotted and uneaten. I think we may have found the real fountain of youth here, people, pork lard and all — and if you’re wondering, yes, twinkies did really contain oodles of pork lard for decades. Should we all be schmearing pork lard on our faces?

Bennatti considers this a science experiment that may never end and it has been featured on channels like MTV, CNN, and BBC although it was obviously pretty bad publicity for Hostess.

Over the years, many people have asked if they could take a bite of the 40-year-old Twinkie, but Bennatti remains firm that it should stay in its glass case at the George Stevens Academy where he taught, as one of the seven unnatural wonders of the world.
