5 Ways Papaya Can Improve Your Health

Written by emilyc

The first time I had papaya, I was already over it, but then someone told me to try it with lime squeezed on it – my life changed. It was everything. You must try it. For added incentive, here are five ways papaya can improve your health (including making you prettier).

Improve your skin. The high levels of valuable nutrients in papaya help fend off free radicals, which means prettier, younger-looking skin for you. Papaya can actually break down dead skin cells and promote skin renewal – so it’s pretty much an edible exfoliant.

Relieve digestive woes.Papaya helps break down proteins that can cause digestive problems. Green papaya is best. One of my best friends used to have papaya shakes growing up in the Dominican Republic whenever she had a stomach ache. At first, I was like, “Placebo!” but then I tried it and was like, “Oh you’re right.”

Boost eye health. Papaya protects against the bad kind of light (scientific term) that can damage our retinas. They also lower your risk of age-related macular degeneration AKA pre-blindness!

Protect against heart disease. Papayas help reduce the oxidation of cholesterol in arteries. Cholesterol oxidation can lead to blocked arteries, and that can lead to heart attacks, thus papayas save lives.

Ward off cancer. Foods, like papaya, that help support the body’s natural defenses aid in the prevention of certain types of cancer.
