8 Low Calorie Alcohol Choices

Written by andy

Low calorie alcohol choices area real. This article is not a unicorn, we swear!

Sadly, alcohol is NOT diet-friendly! Not only is it fairly high in calories, but it can also slow down digestion and reduce calorie burning. But if you can’t see yourself cutting alcohol from your diet completely, here are a few low calorie alcohol choices to consider:

  • Red Wine — When it comes to calories, red wine is one of the best for your diet. A 5-ounce glass of wine contains just 100 calories, and only 2 grams of carbs (read: sugar). When you consider how healthy wine is for your heart and your circulation, you can see why it’s at the head of the list.
  • Tequila –– Tequila is more than just the alcohol to drink when you want to party; it’s also a weight loss liquor! The agavins (a form of sugar) in tequila can help to balance your blood sugar and promote weight loss. Definitely a good option for your weight loss diet. (OK, OK… it’s not like, a “diet alcohol” per se, but it’s definitely better to drink this than a Long Island Iced Tea).
  • White Wine –– White wine doesn’t contain the same amount of antioxidants as red wine, but it’s still a fairly low-calorie drink–just 100 per 5 ounces of wine. It’s usually a better choice to drink red, but nothing helps you to relax like a glass of chilled white wine.
  • Vodka –– In terms of sheer calories, vodka is probably the alcohol with the lowest calorie content. You get just under 70 calories per ounce of vodka, and there is very little sugar in the alcohol. As long as you don’t add any high calorie mixers, there’s no reason why you can’t knock back a shot of vodka to help take the edge off.

  • Light Beer –– If you’re a beer person, light beer is the only diet-friendly choice you can make. A single can of light beer will run you around 100 calories, but sadly you will sacrifice flavor for calories. The more flavor the beer has, the higher the calorie content. The less flavor it has, the lower the calorie count.
  • Martini –– A martini is one of the few mixed drinks you can enjoy without worrying too much about calories. A single martini will run you around 135 calories, so you can get away with drinking just one martini a day. It’s also fairly low in sugar–just 0.2 grams of carbs in every martini.
  • Gin –– A single ounce of gin contains fewer than 70 calories, and there is no sugar in gin. For a serving of gin (usually 1.5 ounces), you get under 100 calories. Definitely one of the better options to consume on your weight loss diet.
  • Whiskey –– Both rye whiskey and Scotch contain under 70 calories per ounce, or 98 calories per serving. There are no carbs in whiskey, so you can drink it without feeling guilty. Just stick to one whiskey drink per day (at most–two or three per week is better), and you won’t break your diet.

In the long run, wine and hard liquors are much better than most other alcohol choices when it comes to calories. Make sure to avoid mixers (such as soda, fruit juice, or anything with sugar), and you won’t have to worry about packing on quite as many possible pounds.
