Allison Schulnik is an incredibly talented artists. She paints thickly textured characters, eerie mammals, and objects in a very bold and physical way. Her new exhibit “Salty Air” revolved around the sea and ocean. Her paintings and sculptures include mermaids, sea creatures, and the most notable sculpted beautiful shells.
This body of work is inspired by old sea-faring tales, most notably the Little Mermaid as told by Hans Christian Anderson, exploring themes of freedom, solitude, and isolation.
Her paintings can be described as “distinctively textured.” Schulnik’s painted outcasts are more stuff than substance, their insides oozing out and dripping all over like a melting ice cream cone. Yet even through the heavily slathered paint the dark psychology and pure(ish) hearts of her lovable losers shine through.
