Nippon Airlines in Japan is now asking customers to piss before boarding. Airline staff will be positioned near boarding gates to remind passengers to use the bathroom BEFORE getting on their flights.
The goal is to save as much weight as possible (yes, human excrement is heavy) in an effort to reduce carbon emissions. Hopefully 5 tons of carbon emissions will be saved each month due to lower fuel consumption from flying around with less crap (literally).
Japanese television station NHK reported that the policy went into effect on October 1, and has been tried on 42 flights so far. Nippon plans to expand if the plan is well received by travelers.
According to the UK’s telegraph…
“Flying is the fastest-growing source of carbon dioxide emissions, accounting for more than 600 million tons of the greenhouse gas per year.
A return flight between London Heathrow and New York’s John F Kennedy airport creates around 2700lb (1.35 tons) of CO2 per passenger – more than one-third the yearly emissions of an average person worldwide.”
