Top 6 Worst Foods for Your Skin

Written by emilyc

What we eat directly affects our skin, and I know this because when I was a baby, I was obsessed with sweet potatoes and carrots, then turned orange. The doctor looked at my mom and was like, she loves her orange vegetables doesn’t she? At least I had a nice natural glow from those foods, but there are some foods that will do you no favors in the skin department. You have 99 problems, but skin ain’t one (As long as you stray from the following six foods).

skincare

1. Salt. First of all, salt makes you puffy all around. Second of all, it makes the skin around your eyes especially puffy, causing you to look cray and Lindsay Lohan-esque. Or maybe present-day Christina Aguilera-esque.

2. Shellfish. Shrimp, crab, and lobster are high in iodine, which can lead to acne. Don’t be afraid to shellfish it up every now and then – the acne only appears after a buildup of iodine over time.

3. Milk. A 2005 study linked higher milk consumption to the presence of acne. Don’t worry – you can find plenty of delicious non-dairy recipes sprinkled throughout our site to help you with your quest for pristine skin.

4. High-glycemic foods. We’re looking at you, white bread, pasta, cake, and corn syrup. These cause blood sugar spikes, and high blood sugar weakens collagen leaving you more susceptible to wrinkles.

5. Sugar. Again, high blood sugar is to blame. It’s not just chocolate that causes bad skin probs – it’s the high sugar content of the sweet treat.

6. Alcohol. How many times have you heard this one? But for realsies, it sucks the moisture out of your skin like Ugg boots suck the sophistication out of your outfit. Plus, alcohol can cause rosacea outbreaks.
