How to Use Facial Oils 101 (and why you should start ASAP)

Written by Bryce

There are a million of them on the market, but you’re probably wondering exactly how to use facial oils. Here’s a breakdown of my favorite facial oils and how to use them.

Facial oils are popping up everywhere– they’re quickly filling up shelves at every drugstore, Sephora, and beauty counter because they’re just so healthy for skin. Our skin naturally produces oils and when we’re running low, replenishing with other natural oils (usually plant-based) is a smart move for healthy skin. If you’ve never tried facial oil because of all the “no oil!” marketing that happening in the 90s, here’s how to use facial oils properly without clogging pores or looking greasy:

1. Start with the obvious approach. If you suffer from dry skin, especially in the colder months, this is the easiest answer to the how to use facial oils question– spread a few drops on dry, flaking skin after using a moisturizing cleanser. This super luxurious formula from Immunocologie is a heaven-sent solution to the dry, delicate skin that often plagues both men and women around the corners of mouths and under eyes. Available here.

2. Use it to remove tough, stuck-on makeup. Try using a less-expensive facial oil to dissolve remaining traces of waterproof mascara, eyeliner, and caked-on glitter (but why would you wear glitter, why?). Dab it on a cotton ball, swipe over areas that need a little extra love, and watch the gross residues just about melt away. The Body Shop makes a cocoa butter beautifying oil that’s particularly light and is extremely affordable, so you won’t feel guilty using it to swab away gunk.

3. Fight split ends and give your hair some sparkle. If your facial oil features a little natural Argan oil, consider moving outward from the face- light, airy oils like Argan are perfect for taming split ends, repairing cuticle damage, and adding luster. Now that’s how to use facial oils, #amiright? Suave makes a Moroccan Infusion Dry Oil Spray that’s great for misting over the face and body, but is particularly jazzy and breathing new life into big, dull hair. Available here.

4. On the go spot treatments. Some facial oils come in capsule form, and that’s a brilliant idea for anyone on the go. Keep a couple in your makeup pouch for spot treatment of lips, cuticles, or behind-the-ears eczema, or try popping the contents of a capsule into a handful of your normal body lotion for a little extra hydration oopm. Weleda’s Wild Rose Smoothing Facial Capsules are the right size to take on the plane, leave in your gym locker, or keep a few of in a desk drawer (and they smell delish). Available here.
