Fruits dogs can eat, because yes, they can.
One thing that pet owners need to learn early on is that dogs shouldn’t eat human food. While they can eat some things we eat, it’s better for them to eat foods prepared specifically for them. They need a balance of protein, carbs, vitamins, and minerals that is very different from the balance we humans need.
However, there are a few human foods you can feed to dogs, and the fruits listed below are all fruits dogs can eat safely:
- Bananas — DO NOT let your dog eat the banana peel, but a bit of banana (about a one-inch thick slice is good) will be a great way to give your dog more potassium and fiber. It’s a little sweet treat, though not all dogs will like it.
- Blueberries –– Want to give your dogs more antioxidants, fiber, zinc, iron, and selenium? Mix a bit of blueberries into their dog chow! You don’t need to give them more than 2 or 3 blueberries at a time. This is one of the easiest fruits dogs can eat to incorporate into an existing diet.
- Apples –– Apples are an amazing source of fiber, potassium, Vitamin C, antioxidants, and other important nutrients, so they may be a good option to feed to your pet. Give the dog no more than half a slice, and be certain that the seeds are disposed of. Apple seeds contain arsenic, and can be harmful to your dog’s digestive system.
- Blackberries –– If your dog isn’t big on blueberries, blackberries are another awesome berry to give them. Not only are blackberries packed with Vitamins A, C, E, and K, but they’re also rich in antioxidants, manganese, fiber, and even Omega-3 fatty acids. Stick with a serving size of 2 or 3 berries at most!
- Cranberries –– For those who want to keep their dog’s pH levels healthy, cranberries are an amazing addition to the pet’s diet. Not only will the cranberries fight excess acidity, but they can help to deal with urinary tract infections. Stick with a couple of tablespoons of stewed cranberries (but not cranberry jam).

- Cantaloupe -- Melon is a great source of the Vitamin A that will keep your dog’s eyes healthy, Vitamin C for their immune system, healthy fiber, minerals, and other vitamins. You can feed them a wedge of cantaloupe around 1 inch thick, and it’s all the fruit they need for the day.
- Kiwis –– For dogs who need an immune boost, the Vitamin C in kiwis makes for an amazing addition to their diet. Give them no more than a slice of kiwi, or half a slice for a smaller dog.
- Strawberries –– If you want to give your dog a treat that you enjoy, give them half a strawberry. Strawberries are packed with vitamins and minerals, along with healthy fiber, Omega-3 fats, and antioxidants.
- Pears –– Did you know that pears are a great source of Vitamins A, C, E, and even a few B vitamins? You also give your dog folic acid, niacin, copper, fiber, phosphorus, and potassium when you feed them pears. Stick with a small cube of pear as a treat.
- Watermelon –– Not only is watermelon wonderful for hydration purposes, but it will deliver a nutrient punch–in the form of Vitamins A and C, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidants. Make sure to pick out the seeds, and avoid feeding them any of the rind. A few small cubes of watermelon will be more than enough.
Make sure to check with your vet before giving your dog any fruits–better safe than sorry!
