A modern day Johnny Appleseed.

An Indian man planted a forest larger than Central Park by himself.

Even if you don’t live in New York, you know that Central Park is pretty big. Imagine planting enough trees to cover a space even larger than that all by yourself.

Jadav Payeng has been doing just that since 1979. When his home, the largest river island in the world was threatened by erosion, Payeng decided to become a modern day Johnny Appleseed and begin planting trees. Since then he has planted a full-on forest complete with hundreds of trees, a process that has been documented by photographer Jitu Kalita in the movie called ‘Forest Man’.

The film won Best Documentary for the American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014.

Basically, Payeng is a pioneer (literally and figuratively) and an inspiration to Earth-conscious people everywhere.
