New technology looks amazingly real…
A team of researchers from Brazil have created a special 3D MRI technology that allows doctors to see the growing fetus from every angle. In fact, the technology may even allow them to see inside the child’s body in order to diagnose health problems while still in the womb!
According to the FDA, a single ultrasound is enough to ensure that a fetus is developing properly. However, an ultrasound isn’t properly able to monitor for a wide range of health problems. Usually, doctors turn to an MRI if there is a potentially serious medical problem. On the downside, MRIs are expensive and difficult to do.
This new technology developed in Brazil combines MRI technology with the Oculus Rift to create a virtual image. Doctors are able to study the image in virtual reality and explore it from every angle. Thanks to the 3D imaging capabilities of the MRI scanner, a full image can be built and models of the fetus created. The fetal images are far clearer and sharper than any traditional MR images or ultrasound scans. The result is a clearer picture of what’s going on in the womb, and a better chance of detecting fetal health problems during the early stages.
The technology allows not just for an external scan of the fetus, but even for a journey inside the baby’s body. It provides doctors with a truly immersive experience as they are studying the child, giving them clearer insights into whatever is happening within the fetus. This will allow a wide range of healthcare providers to see exactly what’s going on and treat any existing health problems—or even prevent problems before they arise. By being able to peer inside the womb and the fetus itself, doctors have much greater capacity to treat and prevent fetal illness.

However, not all medical professionals are as enthusiastic about this new technology. Some worry that it could be nothing more than a “fancy new toy”. As an example, these concerned doctors cite the use of ultrasounds. 3D ultrasounds were taken, with print-outs given to wealthy parents who could afford it, but no medical information was provided. And, according to FDA guidelines, ultrasounds should only be taken “when medically necessary”.
The concern is that ultrasounds and MRIs can both generate heat. Prolonged exposure to the technology used for ultrasounds and MRIs may harm the fetus, as the extra heat can be harmful. While it’s not common for medical technology to be “over-used” to the point of danger, doctors are still concerned for the wellbeing of the growing fetuses.
The good news is that the new 3D immersive technology will not be as cheap as the 3D ultrasounds. The 3D MRI scans will primarily be available to doctors and medical professionals, and will usually be recommended only in cases where they are absolutely necessary. The new technology isn’t likely to increase the risk of health problems as a result of excessive MRI or ultrasound use.
But imagine what it could do to save lives! If doctors are able to catch signs of health problems in the early stages, they will be able to take steps to deal with them. A lot of fetal health problems could be corrected while the child is still in the womb, if only doctors knew they existed. If this new 3D technology could help to save lives, it’s definitely one that should be celebrated. It’s one more way medicine is advancing to protect us from the health problems that inevitably arise.
