Fly Me Away

Written by Aliza

If you’re imagining lounging on a beach in St. Barths right about now, you’re not alone. Millions of Americans go on vacation every year but now there’s an added incentive for packing up and shipping out. Hotels around the world are beginning to participate in “eco tourism” at a surprising, and welcoming, rate. Not only can you now take that much needed time off work, but you can help sustain the environment while doing so.

According to the International Ecotourism Society, ecotourism can be described as “Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.” Specifically, activities you can participate in while on an eco vacation include volunteering your time with local inhabitants, participating in cataloguing species and even just touring the wildlife to gain a greater appreciation of nature.

After an exciting day of running around, coming back to an eco-friendly hotel can be just as thrilling. Typically, eco hotels pride themselves in their ability to utilize renewable resources. This includes solar powered electricity, a strong emphasis on recycling and the use of organic materials and food. All of these features are included without sacrificing luxury or style, which is always a plus.

Travel websites like Orbitz.com allow you to search for key eco-friendly destinations and hotels (Eco.Orbitz.com). If lush, green rainforests and warm sandy beaches are your style (whose isn’t), I’d recommend checking out Costa Rica which offers a substantial amount of eco-friendly hotels and lodges. You can find a great listing of incredible hotels sorted by region at KeytoCostaRica.com/green-rating.htm. I accept donations in the form of plane tickets, thank you.
