Hipster Skin

Written by Bryce

This weekend was a wild good time… Friday was spent at the rooftop of the Empire Hotel, celebrating good times and liberty with The Luxury Spot crew, and our posse (about 600 of that posse anyway).

We took a little downtime on Saturday to gear up for Sunday’s Hipsterfest 2009.  About 50 of New York’s best and most beautiful found their way (miraculously) to Jason’s Park Slope brownstone with a backyard for the opening bbq of the season.  It was 90 degrees, and the perfect time to get a whole bunch of half-dressed young beauties to pile into a backyard for some veggie burgers, collard greens, and a variety of delicious looking sausages (take that however you’d like).  Since it was the first sunny weekend of the year, I had to search like a madwoman for the best sunscreen for Ben (my little bubbeleh), and myself (just turned 25, prevention is everything).  I remember speaking to Manhattan skin guru, Dr. Eric Berger, and hearing him explain that, “sun exposure actually causes your DNA to mutate, which leads to cancer.”

Ugh. I can’t be having that. Dr. Berger was actually nice enough to illustrate this.

Dr. Berger knows best... Even if this illustration is a wee bit creepy.

So, for Bennypoo I managed to get the gold standard in sunscreen… Coppertone’s Water Babies SPF 70.  My baby’s milky white complexion is going to stay just that until he’s old enough to talk and walk.  It’s the #1 pediatrician-recommended brand, and I feel good about that.  It’s tear-free, gentle, and waterproof! We found an 8 ounce bottle (which lasts quite a while), for only 11.99.

For me, I used MelanSol SPF 25.  I know it’s popular to use SPF 15 in a moisturizer, but let’s be real, that’s really not enough.  Dr. Berger gave me a whole schpiel about SPF 30, but I really like this sunscreen so I figure 25’ll do:)  It’s chemical-free, has green tea leaf extract and vitamin E, and has some vaguely clean-meets-medicinal smell.

So protect yourself, and there’s a chance you might be as cool as this:
