Delicious AND nutritious. Lifeway Foods, Inc., the King of Kefir, brings to us yet another tasty treat–Frozen Kefir @ the totally cosmic Starfruit Cafe. Hooray! The “fro-yo craze” might be more than a trend, after all. Starfruit jussssst opened the doors to their second location in the heart of Lincoln Park in Chicago, and they’re soft-servin’ up new flaves on the daily. With 8 rotating flavors, and more toppings than you can shake a stick at, you can create a new Starfruit concoction every time. Or try a low-fat smoothie. My personal fave is a peach kefir smoothie with raspberries, pineapple, and shaved coconut. So delish. But what is kefir you ask? Well, it’s a creamy probiotic dairy beverage similar to but distinct from yogurt. Apparently it has been around for over 2,000 years and many boast it has mystical healing properties! Low-fat or non-fat pasteurized milk is the basic ingredient in kefir.  Its effervescent quality stems from the kefir culture, which contains ten active “friendly” microorganisms, compared to two or three in yogurt. Which means it’s super good for your digestive and immune systems. Yeah, I drink it everyday. No big deal. And a little side note–kefir just might be the most amazing hangover cure ever.
