Open Letter to Dana Jackson, a 100-Year Old Bride

Dana Jackson got married at 100 years old, proves all our hopes about love can be true.

Dear Dana (or Mrs. Strauss),

How is married life treating you? Any surprises yet? You don’t seem like the type of woman to be fazed by much. After all, you did marry your boyfriend Bill on the same day you turned 100 years old.

This video of you prepping for your big day is awesome. Inspiring. And definitely rare. Even you seemed to know that the occasion would be noteworthy, when you said, in that certain Southern drawl, that your wedding would “hit the newspapers”. I wonder if you knew it would hit YouTube too.

Even more cool than the idea of two people finding love and marrying this late in life (your new husband is a ripe 87 years, but I’ll spare you the cougar-talk) is the idea that two people are open and willing to kick off a whole new story together, as husband and wife. That you’re down to dredge through the difficulties of old age alongside someone new. That your heart hasn’t stopped trusting. Senior’s homes don’t get the best rep. They’re not places we associate with happiness or vitality, or due to the discrepant life expectancies of men and women, we don’t often associate them with love either. Your story, besides being adorably hopeful, illustrates what two persistently beating hearts look like. There are people less alive at 20 than you are at 100. But I’m sure you know that.

Thank you for proving we’re wrong about old age. And for proving our greatest hopes about love right: you’re never too old. It’s never too late. Now, please go slow dance to some Journey or whatever it is that you kids are listening to nowdays.

Big ups,

Karina
