The upcoming film, CBGB tells the story of Hilly Kristal and his New York club from its conceit as a venue for Country, Bluegrass and Blues (CBGB) to what it ultimately became: the birthplace of underground rock ‘n’ roll and punk. Hilly Kristal ironically became known as the godfather of punk, giving a chance to such bands as Blondie, Television, Ramones, Talking Heads, Dead Boys and The Police.
Currently there is no trailer yet but I have to be honest, I am always dubious when someone takes something so amazing and iconic and turns it into a mainstream film. It happened with On the Road, and countless other films. The music from the era speaks for itself and there does not have to be some fabricated film with a celebrity cast to show the world how great the Punk Rock scene was in the 1970s. We have the evidence. We have the music.
