Town Pays Alcoholic Street Cleaners with Beer

A German street cleanup project uses beer as an incentive for alcoholic employees, because alcoholic street cleaners are a real thing.

I can’t tell if this idea is genius or ridiculous, but the German town of Essen has recently started Project Pick-up, where they pay recovering alcoholics and addicts a tiny wage to clean the streets, and use beer as an incentive to get them through the day.

The addicts get paid about $1.50 for hour and up to three beers, depending on their individual beer needs. The idea is to get them sticking to regular schedule, and rejoining society by doing something positive like keeping the streets clean.

Some of the workers like the program and see it as a way to give back to the city while getting a nice buzz. Critics of the project say that it perpetuates the idea that alcoholics are bums, and humiliates them.

All I’m saying is that if you have a job that actually allows and encourages you to drink, you should stick with it.

Welcome to my future.
