6 Apps to Help You Get in Shape Post-Holiday

Written by andy

So, Christmas has come and gone, and New Years is just around the corner. You’ve enjoyed those delicious Christmas desserts you and your children whipped up during the holiday season, and it’s been many wonderful weeks of drinking nutella hot chocolate in the evenings. The holidays are almost over, and it’s time to get your life back on track.

If you’re anything like me, the holidays were a time to eat, drink, and be merry! Now, unfortunately, you’re in the same boat as me: trying to get my fitness back on track. It’s time to hit the gym and work off those holiday pounds, and your smart phone may be just the tool to help you – thanks to the 6 apps below:

1.     How to Cook Everything

As a dedicated foodie, I love to cook and eat good food. I still want to enjoy my meals despite being forced to make them low-calorie, and this app is just what I need. It will help me to cook my meals just right, using the science of cooking mastered by professional chefs. It comes with recipe timers, illustrations of what the dish should look like, and ideas for great menus. At $10, it’s a pricey app, but worth it.

2.     Healthy in a Hurry

Health website Eating Well has released this app, which gives you great recipe ideas using all healthy and delicious foods. You can find recipes from just about every popular cuisine around the world, and you’ll be able to track your food metrics – calorie intake, fat consumption, total protein intake, etc. It breaks down your meals into numbers, making it much easier for you to track your healthy diet.

3.     Fooducate

It can be hard to know which foods are the healthiest, which makes shopping for the right groceries a greater challenge than you think. This app is all about healthy choices, and it will grade the food you find in supermarkets to help you know which are the smart choices. Unhealthy foods get the lowest grades, while items like fish, eggs, and vegetables get the highest grades. It takes the mystery out of shopping, and will help to educate you about making smart food choices.

4.     FitDay

I love this app, simply because it helps me to track every aspect of my daily calorie intake (food) and expenditure (exercise). It breaks down my meals into the specific number of calories, grams of fat and protein, and so on, and makes it easy to see using simple pie charts and graphs. If you need a helping hand watching what you eat, this app is definitely a great choice!

5.     Healthy Out

One of the hardest things to do while out and about is eat healthy, making this app the new best friend of any busy professional who hates brown-bagging it to work. You’ll be able to find the restaurants nearest you that have good meal choices, and you’ll even get suggestions from their menus that will be the lowest in calories, fat, etc. You’ll be able to find diet-specific restaurants, and the app will give you specific nutritional details on each dish. It’s a wonderful app, and, best of all, it’s Free!

6.     iTreadmill

Not sure how much exercise you do throughout the day? Turn this app on, put your phone back in your pocket, and let it count the distance you walk, your walking speed, your heart rate, etc. It’s basically a pedometer on your smart phone, and it will make it easy for you to keep track of the number of calories you burn just by walking around every day. When it’s time to hit the gym, you’ll find that it makes running much easier as well!
