I am completely blown away by Pakayla Biehn’s artwork. I wouldn’t even know where to begin in categorizing her art as she has such an array of talent sprawling from paintings, to sculptures, to photography, even light installations. Let us begin with his paintings for now.
To describe Pakayla Biehn’s visual paintings is a mix between realism and abstraction. The original photographs which she begins with are sufficiently conventional. However, what makes her paintings so unique is the layering of other images such as the stark contrasts of bright flowers, leaves, and other elements of nature. Overall, she is combining naturalism with a mystifying dream-like tranquility, which composes the nature aesthetic of the world we see. She coallesces the cultivation of her portraits with a very intimate yet vibrant observation of nature. Her motifs displayed throughout her paintings consist of themes of fleetingness, melancholy, as well as extreme beauty.
Each time I look at one of her paintings and I become overwhelmed with their romantic beauty. Her visual expressionism is extremely rare as it combines the modern-day harshness of photography with the classic romanticism of painting.In an interview she explains, “There’s a bit of my emotion and narrative placed into each of my paintings. I choose each image carefully based on my interacting with it. I’m emotional by nature, so it’s not difficult for me to connect with an image and place meaning within it. It’s important for me to try and create a sort of experience.
