If you’ve been beauty shopping lately you’ve probably noticed how many cream cleansers are on store shelves, but why switch to a richer formula?
“Cream based cleansers are very good for drier skin types and more sensitive skin types. They contain more hydrating ingredients and some can provide a light barrier to minimize moisture loss,” says Dr. Marina Peredo of Skinfluence in NYC. “Dry, sensitive, rosacea-prone, and atopic skin can all reap cream cleanser benefits.”
Not all creamy cleansers are created equal though, and varying ingredients and formulations can help people choose the formula that’s right for them, although it usually boils down to personal preference and knowing just how dry the affected skin is.
“Cold cream is a water in oil formulation that usually includes beeswax. Cream cleansers vary in the formulation such as using oil in water emulsions, different fatty acid ingredients such as shea butter, monoi butter and other types of rich butters.”
One to try: PONDS Cold Cream Cleanser, a classic formula that’s been keeping women’s skin smooth and hydrated for decades. Available at drugstores and here.
When it comes to choosing the right, standard cream cleanser, Dr. Peredo adds “I like a formula that is high in glycerin since it contains hydrating properties that don’t clog pores and had additional benefits that are scientifically well documented. It’s important to use a non-comedogenic cleanser as well.”
The whole point of a creamier formula is to add much-needed skin nourishing ingredients to the skin instead of totally stripping it, so finding a formula made with rich, natural ingredients is a good idea.
