Beauty Spotting: 3 Reasons to Get Your Beauty Sleep

Written by emilyc

Beauty sleep isn’t just a nice little phrase, everyone. Beauty sleep is not playing; it means business. A good night’s rest is a real necessity, and here are some of the most important reasons why:

1. Your skin will resemble Lindsay Lohan’s after a cigarette binge on her way to rehab. Why? Because when you sleep, your skin cells are regenerating, replacing old, ugly cells with pretty, new ones. When you deprive yourself of sleep, your body punishes you with puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles. I know this to be true because I live in the city that doesn’t sleep, and my skin was definitely cuter when I lived in Florida.

2. You won’t be able to wear amazing clothes. Allow me to deduce this. As little as two nights of sleep deprivation can cause hormonal changes that trigger an increase in appetite; therefore, less sleep means hormonal changes that make you want to binge on cupcakes, which means you’ll most likely get fat, which means you won’t get to wear the amazing clothes you once could when you had a healthy sleep schedule. Oh, and when I say binge on cupcakes, I’m not just saying cupcakes for fun; a University of Chicago study showed that the sleep-deprived brain craves carb-heavy foods!

3. You will get acne. Well, that’s not a guarantee, but if you already have acne, lack of sleep will only exacerbate it. Sleep deprivation leads to an increase in stress hormones, which makes acne worse and causes wrinkles. Skin can also lose its ability to stay hydrated, and its sensitivity can increase. Maybe your goal is to be like P. Diddy or Katy Perry and star in a Proactiv commercial, but if it’s not, get some rest, girl.
