Big Ass Fashion Thing for Spring 2015: Hats

Written by Courtney Leiva

Check any spring fashion forecast, and they’ll tell ya; the big ass fashion thing du jour is big ass hats for 2015!

Yes, it may be weird to rock accessories eminent of a Dr. Seuss book, but trust us; designers like Donna Karan and Karen Walker are definitely making this trend happen.

But with bigger brims, comes even greater style responsibilities. When choosing your go-to hat, it’s best not to let your accessories overshadow you.

“Big accessories are in, which creates an opportunity for you to use them as a tool of personal expression. With big accessories, though, comes the responsibility of not letting them overshadow you,” says Constance Dunn, author of DIY style book Practical Glamour.

Ready for some oversized fashion? To pick your big bowler or boho hat, it’s important to take size into accountability first.

“Start with size. Unless we’re talking a big-brimmed chic sunhat, oversized hats can look silly if they’re not chosen wisely. Love the current crop of big-brimmed boho hats? Great! When selecting the right one, opt for a brim that does not measure more than the radius of your head, from the center of your head to its outer edge,” adds Dunn.

After choosing your hat style, it’s time to pick your color! Although it’s tempting to go for bold, striking colors, to rock this trend, it’s best to stick to more functional hues.

“Choose a versatile color. Unless you’re a gal who wear all black, all the time, a black hat can be limiting in terms of everyday wearability. That doesn’t mean you’re sentenced to beige or brown, though, as a red or blue hat can be just as versatile if you’re planning to wear your big hat with a white t-shirt and jeans,” says Dunn.
