Cinema on the Sea: The Yao Noi Floating Movie Theater in Thailand

Have you ever been in the middle of the fucking ocean and thought: “Hmm, this would be a great place to put a movie theater?” Apparently an architect named Ole Sheeren had that idea in Yao Noi, Thailand and decided to build a floating theater made out of recycled materials in the middle of a gorgeous Lagoon. Why do Asian countries always have the coolest stuff?

The program is called Film on the Rocks Yao Noi, and began in 2012 as a way to “share experiences dictated by nature and the tides”. I have no real idea what that really means except that it would be a really cool place to take a first date. If the date is good and you are attracted to the person, sit down, watch the flick, and make your move. If the date is bad, go ahead and push your mis-matched partner into the water, and proceed to scam on some other innocent, unsuspecting soul.

All I know is that I love going to movies, and I love the ocean, so putting the two together makes perfect sense to me.

The best part of all of this though, is that the first Film on the Rocks Yao Noi event in 2012 was curated by Tilda Swinton, the poster-child for androgyny. If that isn’t worth the price of admission and a little potential sea-sickness, I don’t know what is.
