Clueless The Musical: It’s Happening!

Written by Bryce

Clueless The Musical: coming to Broadway sometime kinda soonish.

In a display of total 90s glory alongside the resurgence of grunge rock and sunflower prints, Clueless is being revived as a Broadway musical.

From an interview with ET:

Twenty years after Clueless first hit theaters, director Amy Hecklering revealed new details about the highly anticipated Broadway adaptation. “I’ve written the, what they call the book and it’s a jukebox musical,” she told ET.

Heckerling also confirmed that Kristin Hanggi — best known for directing Rock of Ages, which ran on Broadway from 2009 to 2015 — is set to direct and Dodger Theatricals is producing. They’re the same production group responsible for Jersey Boys, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and the original Broadway run of Into the Woods.

While we’re totally bugging about what music is in store (a reprisal of Coolio’s “Rollin’ With My Homies,” perhaps?), Heckerling didn’t offer any details on potential songs.

Perhaps the biggest hurdle will be finding people to step in for Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, and Paul Rudd. “Well casting — that’s like going to be like the main problem,” Heckerling admitted.

I assume Clueless The Musical is exactly what the next generation needs to get them through their long work days of posting stuff to Twitter and whining about veganism, but it seems unfortunate that there really never will be a match for the original cast. Also, will the 30 and 40 somethings heading to see this stop for a pre-theater early bird first? ARE WE OLD NOW?! Does this fall into the same category as Jersey Boys and other such old-people-need-nights-out-to-rekindle-old-feelings?

Either way, I’m going to see it. I’ll likely wear something flannel and smuggle wasasbi peas and a Boku juicebox in.
