Master these simple DIY beauty tricks that stand up to summer heat while still looking fierce.
Did you know Farmer’s Almanac predicts Summer 2014 as one of the hottest, stormiest seasons on record? Um, hello, that means we’re going to have to focus heavily on heat and humidity-proofing our looks. I spent the better portion of my yesterday at the #SummerGlowSalon sponsored by Pantene, COVERGIRL and Olay tent in NYC. For those of you not in NYC, it was a giant pop-up makeover booth doing good deeds left and right: beautifying gals on their lunch breaks.

It was perfect— except it was literally 92 degrees, humid as a rain forest, and the sun was shining directly onto my soul. I learned a few important things from having my beauty products stand up to that kind of heat for so long:
1. Olay protected me like George Washington defended our shores. Okay, maybe not that dramatic, but I definitely didn’t roast like a tomato after applying a bunch of their SPF 30 facial moisturizer. It also anchored my makeup really well, so that was a bonus.
2. Nails need to be summery. Somehow you just feel cooler, chicer, and way more ready to stand up to the heat if you’re rocking a peachy shade. I got my own nails done in COVERGIRL Outlast nail polish (shade called “Peaches and Cream” obviously), and I’ve been showing them off all day on twitter.
3. BRAIDS. Honestly, the trend that started as just a few whimsical braids a couple years ago has evolved into an entirely different beast— I’m calling that beast “gallery braids” now, because the braids du jour are intricate pieces of art. My favorite style lately is braiding the entire length of my hair and then wrapping it like a cinnamon bun so it’s off my neck and shoulders all day. It’s easy, and only requires a few spritzes of hair spray before the braid (to get the pieces more workable) and after, to set the look. Pantene’s Volume Touchable Hairspray is my go-to because it really holds, but is flexible when you need it to be.
Word on the beauty street is that Target just revamped their cosmetics aisles, making them easier to navigate and just more fun (but honestly, did anyone really need another reason to spend countless hours in the Target beauty aisles?). Beauty Concierges help you navigate the endless skin and cosmetic choices, and wider aisles mean you can finally wheel TWO carts full of the beauty goodies you’re obsessed with (what? we’ve all done it).
And if you love a good deal on your beauty stash (who doesn’t?), the Target Cartwheel app is worth a download so you can score extra savings in insider info.
