Curly Hair Emojis Are Here!

Curly hair emojis are FINALLY a thing… because we’re not all stick-straight types.

It’s been a big week in the world of positive emoji developments– first we announced that computer-ready emoji keyboards were going into production, and today we’re announcing the new line of curly hair emojis just waiting for you to use in any/all contexts. This is a giant step forward for ‘ethnic’ chicks (I’m pretty sure that’s what curly haired girls are called regardless of race, religion, creed, etc), because we’ve been emotionally battling with that washed-up little 1950s lady face in our existing emoji menu since forever.

If you’re thinking ‘but how often am I really going to use curly hair emojis?’ you need to consider something important– ALL THE TIME. Here are a few good examples I can think of immediately:

  1. Non-verbal weather descriptions. Curls = rain, everyone knows that. You don’t need a meteorology degree.
  2. Proof of Judaism for boarding an El Al plane without hassle. It’s not exactly a rabbinical decree, but proving your natural curls is certainly a stepping stone. If you have these downloaded to your phone, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to get through security faster.
  3. Prom. Nobody goes with straight hair to any level of high school dance. It’s basically an American obligation.

I can go on and on, but you get the point. If you’re wondering about the geniuses behind all this springy bliss, it’s Dove.

“Have you ever taken a close look at your Emoji keyboard and noticed that one very popular hair type is missing? If you are part of the 1 in 3 women in the U.S. with curly hair, chances are you have.

Today, Dove Hair will put an end to this #CurlyHairProb by launching the Dove Love Your Curls Emojis. This is an extension of Dove Hair’s Love Your Curls mission, and is a global launch with a purpose – to help women and girls embrace and love their curls by ensuring they see accurate reflections of their hair in their everyday lives.”

So what exactly does all that mean? It means Dove seems pretty aware that 74% of Americans use emojis every day, and 1 in 3 women in America is a curly girl. Do the math- that’s millions of women just waiting for their fair share of the emoji action. This is literally more intense than when the taco emoji didn’t exist. Emojis HAVE diversified, but not enough.

You can download the free Curly Hair Emojis pack here for apple, or here on Google play.

  • Haha! #3 prom! And hooray for curly hair emojis! Even though I’m of the stick straight emoji hair girls, I do love how we’re leaning towards having more choices that better reflect ourselves.
