In Japan, deep fried maple leaves are a popular snack.

You would think this delicacy should come out of Canada, but I think we have proven that besides Ryan Reynolds, nothing good ever comes out of Canada. Japan has picked up the slack though, because deep fried maple leaves, called maple tempura is all the rage over there this fall.

Obviously it isn’t as simple as it seems though, as the maple leaves are carefully selected, preserved in salt barrels for a year, then dipped in batter made of flour, sesame seeds, and sugar and deep-fried for 30 minutes. Because fried maple leaves, right?

A bag of these little bastards costs a little over $5, but taste the best when freshly fried.

Eat your heart out again, Canada.
