When you live in New York and somebody mentions the world’s grossest rivers, chances are the Hudson River immediately springs to mind. The truth is, while the Hudson is no mountain-fed spring, it is also nowhere near as polluted as many of the rivers in other countries, who have less stringent guidelines on waste disposal and other shit (literally).
Rivers are really important to society, because they provide drinking water, transportation for trade, and bathing solutions for really dirty foreign people. Rivers are also culturally significant for religious rituals, but that being said you have to admit that humans pretty much treat their rivers like crap.
