DIY Beauty: OITNB at the Emmys

Written by Bryce

Easy DIY tricks to nail the OITNB stars’ Emmy Awards beauty looks.

In a worst-case-jail-scenario, I think everyone can agree that Laura Prepon would be the go-to prison wife for the normal gals of the world (will my husband read this? I hope the “DIY Beauty” title throws him off). If you loved her look at the Emmys tonight, good news, here’s how to nail it (and don’t worry if you don’t have a Gustavo Cadile dress to wear, a timeless face is your best accessory). Makeup artist to the stars, Colleen Campbell-Olwell walks us through it:

Step 1: I prepped Laura’s skin by removing any makeup residue with Simple Radiance Cleansing Wipes because they are gentle, cleanse and refresh in one step. For a red carpet event, skin needs a lightweight moisturizer that won’t interfere with makeup. I massaged in Simple Protecting Light Moisturizer with SPF 15 since it absorbs quickly and moisturizes skin with a light non-greasy feel.

Step 2: With the skin prepped and hydrated I moved onto makeup. I dampened a Beauty Blender sponge to first apply Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. I then applied Cle De Peau Concealer in Ivory with a small concealer brush to cover small imperfections.

Step 3: A fresh, natural glow for skin was finished by swirling NARS Blush in Taos, a peachy bronze color, onto the cheeks.

Step 4: Onto the eyes! I colored the top lid into the crease with shadows from the Lorac Pro Palette in Sable and Garnet. The dress’ gorgeous emerald color was pulled in by accenting the top lid with Make Up For Ever Eye Shadow in 1300. I topped off her eyes with two coats of black mascara to lengthen and add fullness to her lashes.

Step 5: For the finishing touches, I cleaned up shadow fall out under her eyes with Simple Radiance Cleansing Wipes, before blending concealer under her eyes.

Step 6: Last but not least, a peachy lip.

If you’re a Natasha Lyonne fan (WHO ISN’T?!), you’ll be thrilled to know her Emmys look was so easy-peasy to nail that it basically boiled down to a few good lip crayons.

Burt’s Bees’ lead makeup artist, Katey Denno, thought of this look as the perfect compliment to Lyonne’s gorgeously form-fitting navy lace dress, adorned with lots of gold and black jewelry.

“I started with a light layer of Vapour Organic Beauty Foundation as a base. Then, we went with a ‘vampy’ eye look, using lots of black and gray shados from Kjaer Weiss just on her lid and lash lines, and finished with lots of lashes, topped with W3LL People Mascara”, says Denno. “To round out the eye look, I overdrew her brows slightly, and filled them in with a medium-warm taupe powder.

Next, Denno accentuated Natasha’s cheekbones with a little contour and a pop of peachy pink on the apple of the cheeks.

“And last but certainly not least, the overdrawn Bardot-esqsue mouth finished the look. I used Burt’s Bees new Lip Crayon in Niagara Overlook ($9, www.burtsbees.com), topped with a Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Pink Blossom. This gave her a sultry, intensified, but not over-the-top lip; it’s like her lips, but BETTER. Gorgeous!”
