Does dermaplaning cause acne? Top skincare docs dicuss.

It’s no secret that dermaplaning leaves the softest, silkiest facial skin and the most perfect makeup-ready canvas. But does dermaplaning cause acne? Top dermatologists say that depends on how diligent you are with hygiene.

Here’s how often you should dermaplane your face, if you’re wondering.

Does dermaplaning cause acne?

“Dermaplaning itself doesn’t typically cause acne,” explains Shira Rosen, a research dermatologist based in New York. “It’s a procedure that involves exfoliating the top layer of dead skin cells and the fine hair we call peach fuzz using a sterile surgical blade.”

“This makes smoother and potentially improves skincare products’ effectiveness,” she says, adding that, “If the dermaplaning procedure is done improperly or if hygiene isn’t maintained, it could lead to issues.”

Those issues, according to Rosen, do include acne.

  1. Bacteria Transfer: If the tools used aren’t sterile or the skin isn’t properly cleansed beforehand, bacteria could be introduced to the skin, contributing to acne and other infections.
  2. Skin Sensitivity: For those with sensitive or inflamed skin, dermaplaning could irritate the skin, potentially aggravating existing acne.
  3. Excessive Exfoliation: Over-exfoliating or using dermaplaning too frequently can disrupt the skin barrier, leading to irritation or breakouts.

“To minimize the risk of any adverse effects, it’s important to have dermaplaning done by a skilled professional and to follow good skincare practices before and after the procedure. If you have concerns about how your skin might react, discussing them with your dermatologist or skincare professional is best.”
