What is glycolic acid and why does your beauty routine need it?
Glycolic acid is one of a group of several acids known as alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA), found naturally in sugarcane and other high-sugar content fruits. Glycolic acid works to break the barrier between older, dead, or dull skin cells and the newer, fresher skin beneath. It’s used in a variety of creams, peels, and skin treatments.
How can I use glycolic acid for better skin?
1. Bumpy backs of arms. You know those pesky little white bumps a lot of us get on the backs of our arms? Well, they’re easier to treat than you think. Opt for a body cream or wash with glycolic acid in high concentration built right into the formula (go for at least 10% for maximum results). The glycolic acid will break down the clogged pores and hair follicles gently to eliminate the bumpy texture.
Try Glytone Body Lotion for gentle, yet thorough exfoliation of this problem area. Available here.

2. Dull, lifeless skin. Nothing makes skin more lifeless than dead, dry skin cells from too much environmental exposure. A good mask with glycolic acid can slough off the old stuff, increase circulation, and leave skin healthy and glowing. Be careful- there’s a mild stinging sensation since this is a potent acid, but the result is glowing skin. Try a mask like Lather’s 10 Minute Brightening treatment, one $28 tub will give you about 20 healthy size treatments for face and neck, and you’ll see results instantly. Be sure not to use this just before a big event or going out– it’s best done at night, before bed, and topped with an ultra rich night cream. You won’t have to get an expensive facial for quite some time with this in your arsenal. Available here.
3. It’ll help fade scars and stretch marks. By breaking down the top layer of skin and encouraging new cell turnover, glycolic acid can help speed up the fading process with scars and stretch marks. This method is particularly effective with new scars (under 12 weeks old). Try exfoliating pads with glycolic acid to gently massage over scars or stretch marks one or two times daily, for a minimum of 15 seconds over each area. These are also great for face, neck, and small patches of unexpected adult acne scarring. Try Radical Skincare’s Age-Defying Exfoliating Pads. Available here at Sephora.
4. Clearing gunky pores. If you’re chronically plagued by blackheads in your t-zone and you use Biore strips up like toilet paper, consider adding either a night cream with glycolic acid, or a mild glycolic acid peel to the nose and forehead area twice per week. The acid will break down the dead cells before they will even have a chance to clog your soon-t0-be-dainty pores.
