How To Wear Navy Makeup In A Modern Way

Love navy makeup but don’t know how to rock it in a modern way? Read on, sister.

Out of the blue ’80s style staples have started making a comeback, and that includes the ever-glorious navy makeup look our moms used to rock. Perms are a thing again, neon colors had a moment, and now we’re back to bright-hued eye makeup. Luckily these throwback fads have grown up a bit in the three-ish decades since they were first popular. Instead of reaching for your once favorite sparkly baby blues, use navy makeup instead for a much more modern take.

Trade out your black cat eye for blue. This is the most baby steps way to add blue into your makeup look. For this look I used the Makeup Geek Full Spectrum Liner in Cobalt to draw on a thick cat eye flick. Using blue instead of your standard black liner will brighten up your eyes just like how a blue toned red lipstick makes your teeth look whiter. Color science – it’s fun!

Add navy to your lower smokey eye for a bright pop of color. To keep this look fresh, and not icy like the blue smokey eyes of the ’80s, pair your blue with warm toned browns. In the age of every makeup brand having a gazillion warm nude palettes, you probably have one lying around somewhere. I started this look by applying a wash of taupe eyeshadow all over the lid, and built up to darker, warmer browns in the outer corner.

Then add blue to the lower lash line to shake things up. I started by applying a thin line of the same liner I used above, and blended it out. Blending is super important for this particular look. You need to blend and build up the color slowly because you don’t want it to be a stark blue line under your eyes. You can’t blend too much, though, because you’ll end up looking like you haven’t slept in a year. Sleep looks glam, go for that, mmkay? A goldilocks stopping point is where your lower lashes stop.

Last, try a smokey blue statement liner. For this look I started with a warm brown base on my lids so the blue will really pop. Then I used a matte blue shadow to create a really long flick. To get a sultry smoky effect to this liner look blend the blue upwards. Deepen the color and intensify that smoky look by adding black into the blue at the lash line and blend it in. I also popped on lashes for this look to up the glam factor.

Will you be dipping your toes into the navy blue shadow waters? I predict navy makeup is here to stay for a while, and I’m not mad at that.
