My Lazy Pregnant Lady’s Solution to Frizzy Hair

Written by Bryce

There are a few facts that everyone should know about me right now: the first is everlasting and is simply that I have a giant head of wavy/curly hair that’s often a total pain in the you-know-what to manage, the second is that I’m pregnant with baby number 2, and the third is that I’m obviously too tired and drained to actively be blowing and straightening my hair a few times a week. It simply cannot and will not happen. When the folks at the awesome Patrick Melville Salon in NYC invited me down to try their KeraGreen Smoothing Treatment, I was skeptical. Anything involving keratin scared/scares the bejesus out of me. It’s not safe, terribly unhealthy, and even if I wanted to screw my own body up (which I don’t), I would never do it to my unborn child. Then, bam!, I was directed to a whole bunch of literature and experts that informed me that the KeraGreen treatment is actually organic, safe for pregnancy, and made differently than the regular keratin treatments on the market that are known for causing cancers and breathing complications. This treatment, in fact, was a much gentler distant cousin that’s safe for knocked up ladies such as myself to use and enjoy. My hesitation turned to sheer excitement. I thought, “oh sweet, now I can put even less effort into my grooming… victory!” By the way, I went in looking like this:

I know you’re thinking “whoa, that can’t possibly be your hair,” but when I put absolutely zero effort in for a few weeks, walk outside in the NYC humidity for a little bit, and then run a brush through it… um, yes it can. The process of the treatment was easier than I expected, and basically involved a whole bunch of me sitting, relaxing, drinking lemon-infused water, and chatting with Gary as he waited with me. There was a quick clarifying wash, a little drying action, and then a sort of squishy green conditioning formula was applied to my head. It was lightly fragrant, not at all oily, and had the consistency of a drugstore conditioner (goopy, but not too thick).

My stylist (by the way, all the people at Patrick Melville were super sweet and made me feel right at home) ran it through my hair the same way you’d expect a single-process color to be done, and then told me we’d need to let the bulk of it dry so we can flat iron my head. Wait, no blow drying? She informed me that the blow dryers most stylists use create unnecessary smoke and fumes that simply aren’t necessary, and all that fragrance wafting through the air could really give a pregnant lady indigestion. She was so right, and I was beyond grateful that they’d been so thoughtful about my olfactory senses (basically anything can set my gag reflex off at this point). So when the goopification was complete I headed to the stationary drying area for a little MORE relaxation (read: no complaints here).

About 15 minutes later I was back in my chair, getting flat ironed and feeling kind of in awe of the goopy mixture sort of magically evaporating from my strands of thick, once-frizzy hair. I was told that although I was leaving the salon a pin-straight fertility goddess, I’d return to a smoother version of my waves when I would choose to shampoo either 3 or 4 days later. My hair felt like a dream as I left, but I was nervous that it’d be a greasy mess a day or two later… false. Like I said earlier, the goopy stuff just sort of evaporated and my hair was left super silky, shiny, and not a bit greasy till the third day when I washed my hair.

In the name of science (or laziness, depending on how you look at it) I washed my hair as normal 3 days later, and didn’t do a darn thing to it when I hopped out of the shower. No serums, no balms, no heat tools- nothing. I went head naked and let my mane air dry, and whaddya know? It didn’t look it the usual hot mess I’m accustomed to. Instead, it was a sort of smoother version of beach waves that gave me a sigh of “oh I guess I won’t be pulling this back into another high bun” relief. LOVE.

You know what else is worth loving? We’re giving 1 lucky reader a chance to win the treatment for free (valued up to $400) this week. Click here for details.

  • Congratulations! And about your hair… 🙂 it’s gorgeous. I’ve been wondering about those treatments.

  • The transformation is incredible! Now that it’s been a few weeks, do you find the results consistent? I’d love to see an after, after a few more weeks!! When does the giveaway end?

  • How come they never show a picture of the “3 days later after shampooing”. My hair always looks great leaving the salon. I want to know if it will look halfway decent a week later.
