It’s National Wine Day! Let’s Celebrate.

Written by Bryce

National Wine Day has our attention, here’s how to properly salute this festive occasion.

Did you know that women are typically better wine tasters than men, since so much of the job is based on one’s sense of smell (women simply have better scent detection areas in their brains)? Or that moderate wine consumption is said to protect against gum disease? Well, it’s National Wine Day, so here’s everything you need to know to get your full celebration on:

1. California, New York, and Florida lead the pack in US wine consumption.

2. It’s proper to fill a wine glass about 1/3 of the way to ensure more than enough room for swirling without spilling. Also, it allows aromas to rise.

3. California produces the most wine grapes in the US, and the fourth highest amount in the entire world following France, Italy, and Spain.

4. Wine offers a super potent antioxidant called Resveratrol. In high concentrations, this antioxidant offers anti-aging and cardiovascular benefits. It can be found in OTC supplements and even beauty products, like this facial moisturizer by Resvology, harnessing the power of Resveratrol into the 4-AR molecule. Check it out here.

5. Most wine glasses are curved in at the top to help trap aromas inside. Put the glass to your lips and your nose will dip into the perfect environment to truly savor every note of the aroma.

6. White wine should always be served BEFORE red.

7. Noble Rot is a type of wine grape fungus that can actually sweeten the end result.

8. You can make some really adorable things from your leftover wine corks, like this cork-frame mirror, perfect for checking yourself out when you’re buzzed.

9. Every bottle of wine contains roughly 2.8 lbs of grapes.

10. Wine, traditionally, is stored on its side to keep the fluid in contact with the cork at all times– this prevents the cork from drying out and cracking. Artificial corks negate this risk.

11. Deep, dark red wines typically come from warm climates, while paler red shades often come from cooler areas.

12. Enologists are wine chemists– yes, that’s a job.

13. Grapes are the only fruit that are able to produce the proper nutrition for the yeast on its skin and sugar in its juice to ferment naturally– voila, wine!

14. Hippocrates included wine in almost every single recorded remedy he provided. He was, after all, the father of modern medicine.

15. There are several internet hate groups devoted to the destruction of any and all GMO-grapes.

Now get out there with a bottle or three and celebrate (responsibly)!
