New Scents, New Year

Are you still looking for that non-committal refresher for 2009? The kind that comes without a 1-year membership fee?

Start small with a new fragrance this season. I know I had been wearing the same perfume for years – Burberry, classic – and when I finally decided that it was time for a change, I found that it was much more difficult and trying than I had anticipated.

Since scents have their own sense – and smell different on every individual depending on your body chemistry, how can you trust a reviewer to tell you what’s going to work best for you?

So let me take a step down from my own soapbox and give you some suggestions that might just help you make that choice for yourself:

Neil Morris is a fabulous, famed perfumer, based out of Boston – my college alma mater – who sent us a sample of his custom scent for Takashimaya New York. Woody, mature, and stiffly sophisticated – while it was not my cup of tea – my mother couldn’t have been more pleased.

No frets though, Neil Morris hands the silver spoon to all his clients when they sit down for a custom scent consultation – that will leave you walking away with a perfect hand-crafted scent that seamlessly blends your body’s DNA with Morris’ mastery of decadent smells and sensations.

If you can’t make it to Bean Town, every girl’s favorite beauty toy store – Sephora has you covered with their scent sampler kits ($50-$70USD)- narrowed down to New Classics, Best Sellers, and Trendsetters – giving you generous deluxe sample sized vials of some of their favorites – letting you have a trial run before committing your enclosed voucher for a full-size version of one of the testers.

Finally, if you’re searching for that perfect scent but can’t choose and you don’t want an item off the most wanted list at Sephora – try The Perfumed Court for your own selection of sample vials of rare and unique perfumes.

I was able to score a sample size of Henri Bendel‘s – my favorite playground – new signature scent ‘Bendelirious’ by Etat Libre d’Orange – a blend of champagne, cherry lollipop, and grapefruit essence – for $3 – which led me to a new signature scent of my very own!
