Pyote, Texas. This ghost town is little more than an airplane graveyard and abandoned airfield, but it’s an awesome place to see the stars or get bit by a rattlesnake.

I’ve only ever set foot in Texas once, in the middle of a five-day Greyhound bus trip. Don’t look down your nose at me about it, because I was in college and it was one Hell of an adventure. All I remember was that there was nothing as far as the eye can see except heat, and I appreciated that. I do love guys from Texas though, so I have to admit that it’s definitely on my list of places to explore a little more. If you’re feeling the Texas travel bug like I am, these five random Texas towns are a great place to start.

Hico, Texas. Pronounced “high-co”, this town is just Southwest of Fort Worth and is well known for having the best pie around. Have sex with the pie at your own risk, please.

Marathon, Texas. Called the gateway town to Big Bed, feel free to visit the Marathon jail, which is actually an old windmill that they used to chain up criminals.

Driftwood, Texas. Southwest of Austin, Driftwood is home to barbeques, wineries, breweries, and the most beautiful countryside Texas has to offer. Of all the random Texas towns, this one may be the most delicious for hungry travelers.

Terlingua, Texas. Called an alternate community or a ghost town, Terlingua is between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. This is the place to go to celebrate the 4th of July, apparently.
