Red Market Late Night Salon, Manhattan’s First

Written by Alexis

For perfect party hair, New Yorkers need not look any further than the Red Market.

Founded by Reynald Ricard and David Cotteblanche who first met at the acclaimed salon Jacques Dessange in Paris and then worked together at Frederic Fekkai (which basically means that they are beyond brilliant with regard to hair), the Red Market salon was conceived after Cotteblanche and Ricard found themselves transforming part of Cotteblanche’s apartment into a make-shift salon in order to accommodate those who were unable (or unwilling) to show their locks some love during regular business hours. And so was born the idea for Red Market

Catering especially to clients who either can’t get out of the office during regular business hours (and don’t want to give up their few weekend days) or for women looking for a place to get going-out-glam without having their buoyantly blown-out do flattened before their big night out, Red Market is the first full-service hair salon in Manhattan open exclusively in the evening. And, considering it’s location – nestled perfectly in the Meatpacking district – it could not be a more ideal hair-heaven for all your lovely ladies looking to lay back before you let loose.

I arrived at the salon on one of the numerous rainy days last week with hair so overly processed and damaged that it was practically whoring itself out for some loving. And so I met Agatha who offered me a glass of wine, like any upscale “date” would – I mean my hair doesn’t pimp itself out for any old “Jon” bearing conditioner – and lay back for a much-needed deep conditioning hair treatment. With its relaxed, lounge-like atmosphere, with music playing (which gets louder as it gets later), and a fully stocked wine bar for your sipping pleasure, Red Market is the perfect place to stop for pre-party or post-work pampering. Oh and my hair felt and looked freakin’ fantastic when I left – although I have to be honest, I would have probably wanted to go back to Red Market to hang out even if I had walked out hating my do.

While working as a health and beauty writer has its perks (like being able to get your hair done in the middle of a Monday afternoon) I would nevertheless go back the Red Market any day (or night). I am, in fact, even considering throwing a pre-bachelorette party bash for my best friend here (I mean it doesn’t get much better than a pampering pre-party – with free wine – does it?!)
