I have never been much of a rum drinker, unless you count the endless beach Sundays I spent in Florida, drinking out of a handle of Captain Morgan and having sand sex. I believe rum is a daytime drink, fit only for weekend getaways, vacations, and desperate afternoons. I do like the liquor however, although I haven’t given it much of a chance. To rectify that grievous error, here are 5 rum drink recipes you need to try before you die.

The Rum Cosmo
Ingredients:
• 2 ounces of quality White Rum
• 1 ounce cranberry juice
• 1/2 ounce quality orange liqueur
• 1/2 ounce fresh squeezed lime juice
Method:
In a cocktail shaker add the Rum, orange liqueur, cranberry juice, and lime juice. Top with cubed ice and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add a lime wheel or lime wedge for a tart addition or an orange for a slightly sweeter take.
The Rum Toddy
Ingredients:
• 1.5 ounces of quality Aged Rum
• .5 ounce orange liqueur
• 6 ounces fresh brewed Earl Grey Tea
• orange wheel
Method:
In a large tea cup or mug add the orange whell followed by all of the wet ingredients. Give it a proper stir to disolve the honey and blend all of the flavors. Serve hot.
The Aged Rum Manhattan
Ingredients:
• 2 ounces of quality Aged Rum
• 1 ounce Sweet Vermouth
• 3 dashes orange bitters
• orange twist if you like
Method:
In a mixing glass half-filled with ice add the Rum, vermouth, and bitters. Stir with gusto for 20 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass or pour over ice into a tumbler and add an orange twist if you like.
The Casablanca Cocktail
Ingredients:
• 2 ounces of quality White Rum
• 3/4 ounce Briottet Crème de Cerise
• 3/4 ounce Cointreau
• 1/2 ounce fresh squeezed lemon juice
Method:
Pour all ingredients along with a handful of whole ice into a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Enjoy!
The Rum Smash
Ingredients:
• 2 oz. Dark Rum
• 4 mint leaves and one sprig of mint
• Half a lemon quartered
• 3/4 oz. Simple syrup
Method:
Muddle all ingredients except Rum in a bar glass. Add Rum and shake with ice. Strain into an ice filled rocks glass and garnish with a sprig of mint and a lemon wedge.
