Surprised? Yes, soda water benefits are real.
Listen, I love my LaCroix as much as the next gal, but I nearly flipped it when I heard people are using seltzer on their skin. There are soda water benefits for skin? Oh yeah baby! But, put down that pamplemousse, you’ll need to stick with the plain stuff to try any of these.
Soda water benefits: how do they work?
I asked Michael Lin, MD, Beverly Hills Dermatologist what the deal was with soda water and skincare. He said that it has a low pH in the range of three to four. This means that it’s acidic (and probably why your dentist isn’t on board with you chugging the bubbly stuff). Dr. Lin says “the acid can be used to exfoliate the skin to brighten the skin and unclog pores.”
You read that right! Soda water sounds like the skincare holy grail.
Soda Water Benefits: Exfoliation
Keeping my skin exfoliated is basically the only chance I have at having clear skin. My skin just loves to hold onto old skin cells! What can I say, maybe it’s just sentimental.
Exfoliating the skin is helpful in getting that skin cell turnover going. To get this soda water benefit you can apply the soda water with a cotton round, just like any other toner. I’m sure you’ve seen videos of women sticking their whole face in a bowl of seltzer to get those benefits. While I’m sure it’s a great wake up call it seems like a huge waste of soda water, and a great way to get a ton of bubble water up your nose.
Soda Water Benefits: Brightening
Exfoliating the skin can over time lead to brighter, clear looking skin. Using soda water as your toner can totally help with this! Because it’s an acid you’ll want to make sure that you’re not overdoing it, and that you’re wearing sunscreen every day.
Plus, if you are worried about brightening your skin, sunscreen should already be a daily habit. Trust, nothing is going to do the opposite of brightening quite like the sun.
Soda Water Benefits: Unclog Pores
Clogged pores are the bane of my existence. They’re not cute, they’re hard to get rid of, and they are a stepping stone to acne. Unclog your pores by using an acidic toner regularly.
If you’re not into wasting all your soda water on your skin, you may also like a *ahem* real skincare product. I’m a big fan of the Pixi Glow Tonic, Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix, and (gasp) Alcohol Free Stridex.
