Solarsiedlung solar village.

A solar village in Germany is the world’s first community to create 4X more energy than it needs.

Ever since Captain Planet, I have been really interested in solar energy. After all, it seems kind of silly that we aren’t taking advantage of a burning hot, giant ball of gas hovering out there in space as a means of sustainable energy. German architect Rolf Disch (German names always sound dirty, right?), successfully created the Heliotrope, otherwise known as the first building in the world to capture more energy than it consumes.

In a bid to outdo even himself, he has now created a village around that building, involving retail, commercial, and residential space consisting of over 60 buildings. And if you love this, check out this Tesla solar panels review.

The village is called Solarsiedlung, and is located in Freidburg, Germany, also known as the ecological capital of the country, and home to Europe’s largest solar energy research center.

Hopefully it’s only a matter of time before there are many more solar villages out there, harnessing the power of the sun instead of mining this poor planet of all it’s resources. If nothing else, I’m sure the second San Francisco reads this they will have solar panels installed on all their tall buildings.

Here’s looking at you, China and India– care to ante up and match this impressive eco feat?
