Style Spotting: Bastille Day, C’est Chic!

Written by emilyc

In honor of le quatorze juillet, the day of France’s independence, I think it is only appropriate to take a moment to reflect on one of France’s most important features: a great sense of style. I mean, they invented the word chic. Instead of observing the fashions of France through the country’s countless accomplished designers, let’s appreciate how fashion has been infused into their political system with some photos of the first ladies!

You’re working that braided headpiece, Yvonne de Gaulle.

Danielle Mitterrand, you’re giving us such a vintage moment here. Love.

Cecile Attias, this look is saying, “If I were American, this wouldn’t be ok, but I’m French so I’m so chic, it hurts.”

Carla Bruni, we’re mad at you/want to be you/thank you for making Sarkozy’s presidency such a whirlwind of custom YSL and chicness.

Emily is a New Yorker trapped in a Floridian's body and loves every minute of her big city life. With a major in international business and years of being surrounded by ill-fitting suits and all the wrong shoes, she learned that the importance of fashion needs to be communicated to the world. To her, fashion is on the same level as charity work and feeding hungry children. Emily can be found frolicking the streets of her gayborhood enjoying the off-color humor of the gays.
