Style Spotting: Building Visual Interest with Jewelry

Written by emilyc

I love contrast in everything from decor to interracial couples – it just makes life more interesting! One way to make your own look more intriguing is to create contrast through the use of jewelry that wouldn’t normally be paired with your ensemble of choice.

Take the below photo for example: a bling-heavy formal necklace is worn with a super casual, neutral khaki shirt. It may not have been your first choice of accessory, but it totally works! In my experience, you can find fabulous, reasonably priced statement pieces similar to the one pictured at J. Crew, or even costume jewelry shops.

Another take on this method is to do the opposite: pair earthy, bohemian jewelry with a more elegant outfit. My go-to brand for successfully achieving this look every time is Lex & Lynne, a line of beaded necklaces and bracelets in aesthetically pleasing combinations of materials from around the world (see larger photo above). These necklaces and bracelets add so much character to an outfit when mixed and matched together – perfect for adding personality to an otherwise buttoned-up look.

With a major in international business and years of being surrounded by ill-fitting suits and all the wrong shoes, she learned that the importance of fashion needs to be communicated to the world. To her, fashion is on the same level as charity work and feeding hungry children. Emily can be found frolicking the streets of her gayborhood enjoying the off-color humor of the gays.
