Swimming in Pink: Lake Retba, Senegal

Pink Lake Retba
Written by Gary

The term swimming in pink is typically used by frat boys to talk about vaginas in a classy way, but in this instance I am referring to Retba Lake, in the Cap Vert Peninsula of Senegal. A gorgeous naturally occurring lake filled with pink water.

Pink Lake Retba

In French, the name is Lac Rose, which refers to the intense pink color of the water. The rose color is caused by a harmless form of cyanobacteria, accompanied with a super-high salt content, even more than the Dead Sea. As if it weren’t awesome enough to bathe in pink water, this also means that floating is really easy. So the next time you feel like tripping to somewhere that is both obscure and awesome, consider sipping on some jugs of Cosmopolitans with your girlfriends, while floating in a sea of carnation pink.

Just make sure you leave the boys at home. The vagina jokes would ruin the mood.
