The Most Intense (and Expensive) Beer on the Planet: Sam Adams Utopias

Written by admin

When Sam Adams brewmasters aren’t perfecting the mainstays, the board of directors lets them get experimental in the basement. The result is the Extreme Beers series, a collection of rare and unusual brews.

The Luxury Spot got to sample the latest extreme beer, Sam Adams Utopias 2009. Packaged in an eye catching copper kettle, Utopias is attracting a lot of attention. Fewer then 10,000 24oz bottles will be produced, at a suggested retail price of $120.00.

Sam Adams Utopias is rich and intense, with a 27% alcohol content by volume. It is brewed at a high gravity with malted barely and maple syrup.

Drinking Utopias is certainly not a typical beer experience. It has no head whatsoever, and two ounces of the deep amber liquid goes a long way. It has a sweet and woody flavor, with hints of caramel and a VERY alcoholic aftertaste. It tasted very much like a nice sherry or cognac, and the drinking experience was like sipping nuanced liquor.

Traditional beer drinkers might be taken aback at first, but once your palate acclimates it’s a flavorful and unusual experience. Definitely more for the connoisseurs, but if you are a fan of the Sam Adams brand and enjoy very intense spirits, pick one up for the holidays. The copper kettle will serve about 12 privileged friends.

Or one gluttonous drunk.
