They often say that time flies, but I kind of disagree. I think time disappears. One minute I am a spindly little gay boy dreaming about how one day my life will be an episode of “Queer as Folk” (P.S. it was), and the next I am 30, and all I have to do to get into clubs without my I.D. is smile and count the crow’s feet.
There are a lot of things we want for ourselves when we are young, and then we grow up and realize that not all of them are going to happen. So, in the spirit of living for the day, here are three things you can do today to honor the life you thought you might one day have:
Plan a trip somewhere you have always wanted to go. Even if you don’t have the money right now, planning is the first step to doing. For me, this place was Brazil. Penis-murdering spiny fish aside, visiting the rain forest was always one of my fondest dreams. Tell yourself you will make this trip happen by the end of the year, and then start saving your loose change. You should also research ways to travel cheaply, because there are ways to work while you vacation so you don’t spend any money. I say this as I am working from Florida, in case you don’t believe me.
Get in contact with an old friend you thought you would keep in touch with. I know life gets in the way, but I still sometimes wonder whatever happened to my first girlfriend. Specifically, I wonder how fat she got. Still, getting in touch with someone you thought you would always be friends with is a great way to revisit who you used to want to be.
Rent or test drive the car you always envisioned you would have. You don’t have to buy the thing outright to be able to enjoy it. Nowadays, renting a car is easier than purchasing a gay hooker in West Hollywood. Taking your dream car for a test drive might re-align your goals and make it possible for you to own it one day.
