Travel Gear Spotting: In-Flight Fashion

Written by emilyc

In my opinion, dressing up for a flight is a necessity – maybe not to the extent shown in the above photo of Lady Gaga (although I am not opposed to that), but to the extent that you look respectable and not as though you are headed to a sweatpants convention. I will start by quoting a recent tweet by celebrity stylist Brad Goreski,

“So many neck pillows and sweatsuits on my flight. Maybe I should take this time to explain being comfortable AND looking cute..Not that hard.”

Exactly. The last thing you want to like after a five hour flight is someone who has just been on a five hour flight. I’ve compiled some options that will ensure both chicness and comfort when traveling on an airplane.

Sweater, cardigan, or fur vest in neutral or black: Flights tend to get chilly at times, so a sweater or loose-hanging cardigan is a cozy and stylish way to stay warm.

Minimal jewelry: Avoid stress when going through security by streamlining your jewelry. A simple, elegant pair of earrings is just the right touch to show that you care about your travel look.

Dark jeans or leggings: Sweatpants may be tempting, but aren’t jeans comfortable too? Pair a dark jean with your neutral top and you’re well on your way to a chic, understated ensemble. If you opt for a tunic top, pair that with dark leggings for a comfortable yet fun look.

Boots or flats: In-flight shoe removal must be easy in order to achieve the utmost comfort once nestled in your seat. Low top boots or flats are the perfect shoe to fit the stylish and practical criteria – and you won’t delay the security line either!

Sunglasses: A big black pair of sunglasses can serve many purposes on a flight. Jet-lagged? Put on your sunglasses. Make up wore off? Put on your sunglasses. Sleeping? Sunglasses=eye mask. Neighbor trying to tell you all about their experience at Disney World? Sunglasses ward off unwanted conversation. Plus they up the chic factor if worn properly.
