Untold Female Reproductive Facts (oh my)

Written by Bryce

You have a uterus, most likely, since you’re reading this. Chances are you’ve loved and hated it mutually, along with all the other lady parts responsible for keeping you femme and fabulous, but there are a lot of interesting facts and functions most of us are never told about. Enjoy.

1. The human uterus is stretchier than any elastic we’ve ever worn. When unused, it’s about 3 inches. When a woman is near full term in a pregnancy, the uterus reaches all the way from the pelvis to the rib cage.

2. The vagina is pretty acidic. It has a similar pH level to tomatoes. Watch out, heartburn sufferers!

3. I’ll take a double, thanks! There’s a rare condition called “uterus didelphys” which means you’re a lady with more than one uterus. Most afflicted women only have two (only?), but that means a double period. Oh boy.

4. Wait, the school nurse never told me that? Everything your mom told you about childbirth was accurate (sort of), except for the details she left out. We typically all think “baby gets out, placenta gets delivered, and there’s a little blood and discharge to follow.” The truth is, most women bleed heavily for a minimum of 2 full weeks after childbirth- some as many as 8. The discharge is a thick, beyond-period like substance that makes a lot of women reconsider breeding again for at least a few months. Thanks, nature!

5. Vaginas go to Hollywood! What film company would you bet first used the word “vagina” on film? DISNEY! They produced a short, educational movie in 1946 for women’s health. Minnie must’ve had a vagina, so, it all makes sense.
