Mickalene Thomas is my favorite artist. She is a post-post-post lesbian feminist. (Yes third generational). I went through a semester in college where I took this black feminist class (I am a white Jew from New York btw) and was so moved and convicned I wanted to run for office and save all the women and girls in the world. Anyway, my professor turned us onto this amazing painter who creates these beautiful whimsical and pro-female paintings of famous and unfamous black women.
Mickalene Thomas is a Brooklyn based artist best known for her elaborate paintings compsoed of rhinestones, acrylic and enamel. She introduces a complex vision of what is means to be a woman and expands common definition of beauty. Her work stems from her long study of art histroy and the classical genres of portraiture, landscape, and still life.
